Frida: The Spirit Behind KAHLO

Frida Kahlo was more than an artist

Frida Kahlo was not only one of the most iconic Mexican artists of the 20th century — she was a woman who lived with deep intensity. Born on July 6, 1907, in Coyoacán, Mexico, her life was shaped by pain, passion, and an unyielding desire to express her truth. From a tragic bus accident at age 18 that left her with lifelong injuries, to her stormy yet passionate relationship with the painter Diego Rivera, Frida channeled everything into her art.

“Pies, ¿para qué los quiero si tengo alas para volar?”
— Frida Kahlo

he and Diego Rivera

one of the most celebrated muralists in the world — had a complex and deeply emotional love story. Married in 1929, they were both lovers and rivals, muses and mirrors. Their relationship was filled with separations and reunions, politics and poetry, art and heartbreak. And yet, through it all, Frida never stopped painting her inner world.

Frida lived in New York briefly during the early 1930s

when Diego was commissioned to paint murals at Rockefeller Center and other institutions. She wasn’t in love with the city — in fact, she often criticized its materialism — but it left a mark on her, and some of her most introspective works emerged from that time.

At KAHLO, we don’t just carry her name — we carry her spirit.

Frida represented resilience, authenticity, and unapologetic identity. She was political, poetic, raw, and radiant. She spoke up for women, for the marginalized, and for herself. She painted pain as beauty and turned her body into a canvas of truth.

From July 11th to 13th, we’ll be honoring her legacy in our own way — through what we do best: sharing flavors rooted in tradition, served with heart.
